Railroad and Shipyard Department
What Our Members Do:
Union Sheet Metal Workers work in freight and passenger rail transportation, including commuter railroads. Our members perform the work of our craft in maintaining and rebuilding locomotives that move freight, long distance passenger train equipment and equipment used in commuter rail service. Additionally, members of our craft maintain heating and ventilation systems within the railroad shops, yards and buildings. Railroads use tremendous amounts of fuel, water, oils and other chemicals. Our members maintain the systems that deliver these liquids to the point of use and in many instances operate/maintain the pollution abatement systems that recover the chemical waste generated within railroad facilities.
Dewey Garland serves as Director of the Department and can be reached at 202-662-0877.
