Put Someone in Charge
Whether you are planning for an intensive publicity campaign or seeking coverage for a single event, you must plan ahead to be successful. You may want to designate specific contact personnel or recruit members for a communications committee at your local union.
Organize How You Will Discuss the Issues
It is important to talk about the issues in a way that will appeal to the general public. Making a connection between your cause and the overall public welfare will go a long way into generating support. For example, you can discuss how “responsible contractor” statutes can protect the public from poor construction defects.
Let Members Do the Talking
The general public will have an easier time connecting with members in the media rather than union officials. Members give the story a good human-interest angle. The same is true for unrepresented workers seeking representation during an organizing campaign.
Take Advantage of Breaking News Stories
When you hear about a news story of concern to the Union, contact the media immediately and offer the union’s views.
Create Events
Rallies or press conferences are effective tools in creating news. They give reporters something to cover.
Familiarize Yourself with the Local Press
How much coverage you get depends on how easy it is for reporters to do their job. Invite local reporters over to meet members and local union officials. Show them that the union is more than just the face of an international organization; it is a group of local people concerned about improving their lives and their communities.
Make the Reporters Job Easier
Provide reporters with ideas for story angles. Show them why your issue or event should be covered an why it is newsworthy. Give them background sheets and talking points that outline the issues and how you want them to portray your local.
Send Out Press Releases
The most effective way of broadcasting your message to the local press is through press releases. Provide quotes, facts and background information in the releases to help them do their job.
