Today, September 17th is Constitution Day, celebrated by law inthe nation’s schools, universities, and federal offices. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution by its 39 framers in Philadelphia in 1787. But another date in September, Labor Day, is also important,because without the sacrifices of union activists the Constitution’s promise of free speech might never have become a reality.
