Local 36 member Carla Buschjost was recently appointed to be Director of the Division of Labor Standards (DLS) at the Missouri Department of Labor. In this position, Buschjost will oversee the Division’s worker safety sections and will have executive oversight of Missouri’s Child Labor and Prevailing Wage laws.

In a move that angered residents across Florida, as well as the state’s Congressional delegation, CYVSA, the largest HVAC contractor in Mexico, received permission from both the state of Florida and the U.S. Department of Labor last year in a bid to bring workers in from Mexico to install the air conditioning and heating ducts - even though there are more than a thousand unemployed sheet metal workers in the Miami area.

With dissenting votes only from Sens. Pat Roberts, R-Kansas, and Thomas Coburn, R-Okla., the Senate Labor Committee on Feb. 11 approved Democratic President Barack Obama’s nomination of Rep. Hilda Solis, D-Calif., to become Secretary of Labor.  No date was set for a full Senate vote on her, but easy confirmation was expected.
