Alberta Reservist Training

Alberta is currently the only Canadian province without any legislation protecting the employment of Canadian Forces reservists who take a leave of absence from their regular employment to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Nunavut and Yukon Territories also have yet to enact such legislation.

On February 10, 2009, Alberta legislators introduced Bill 1, the Employment Standards (Reservist Leave) Act, 2009, which would bring this protection to employees in the province.

According to the bill, an employee who is a reservist and who has completed at least 26 consecutive weeks of employment with an employer is entitled to unpaid reservist leave in order to take part in Canadian Forces operations, whether inside or outside Canada, and Canadian Forces training.

The length of leave will be determined by regulation or for as long as the training or operation applies to the employee.
